- Story Text: U.S. envoy in Russia for counter-terrorism talks.
United States Deputy Secretary of State Richard
Armitage held talks with Russian officials in Moscow on
Thursday (October 28) focusing on joint efforts to counter
terrorism.
Russian Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov met
Armitage in the Kremlin. The meeting has come at a time
when the governments of Russian and the United States have
been brought closer by national security concerns.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been a strong ally
of the Bush administration in terrorism issues. Last week
he said that terrorists in Iraq wanted to keep Bush from
winning November 2 presidential elections.
Armitage said in his meetings that the visit was not
tied to the U.S. election campaign, but to ongoing security
concerns for the two nations.
"In recent years, no country has suffered as much from
the scourge of terrorism as the Russian Federation. And
history would judge us, the two of us, both sides, very
harshly if we weren't seen as working rigorously and fully
in the best interests of our people," said Armitage.
Armitage co-chairs a bilateral anti-terrorism working
group, along with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei
Kislyak. The U.S. official refused to provide details of the
working groups plans but in a meeting with Russian Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov, both sides said they hoped the
group would produce concrete results.
"We place great importance on the work of the group
that you and Mister Kislyak co-chair and we expect to
receive the most concrete and practical results from it,"
said Lavrov.
"Notwithstanding our coming election, it's our duty,
our job and our honour to be here and stand side by side
with our Russian friends as we work to defeat this scourge.
And the horror and tragedy of Belsan which causes
Americans to mourn with Russian citizens puts new urgency
in the work which Mister Kislyak and I are engaged in. And
I'm authorised to promise you our upmost efforts and
practical, real achievements, not rhetorical achievements,"
said Armitage.
