- Story Text: Businesses have been burned and looted and the army
deployed on the streets of a neighborhood in Caracas,
Venezuela, to maintain public order in the wake of the
attempted toppling of President Hugo Chavez.
Amid persistent uncertainty and confusion, businesses
have been looted and burned in Caracas, the capital city of
Venezuela, while political leaders try hard to restore
normality in the aftermath of the attempted coup against
President Hugo Chavez.
Meanwhile, agents of a federal police agency broke into
the headquarters of the Motorized Metropolitan Police and
apparently searched for unspecified documents pertaining to
Chavez's critics.
Soldiers were deployed in a neighbourhood of Caracas
where the looting occurred to enforce public order. There were
no reports of arrests or clashes between police, soldiers and
civilians.
The clean-up after the failed coup headed by high ranking
military officers and Pedro Carmona, a wealthy businessman,
continued in spite of repeated promises by Chavez that there
won't be a witch-hunt.
