- Story Text: Thousands of Moscovites flocked the biggest stadium in
town to take part in the yearly beer festival, organised by
the Moscow government.
Even though vodka historically has been Russians'
favourite drink, beer is becoming more popular in Russia every
year. On Saturday (July 15) thousands of beer-lovers filled
the biggest sports arena in Moscow to take part in the beer
festival, organised by the Moscow government.
Moscow's mayor Yuri Luzhkov, a long-time beer fan, opened
the festival by filling up his big beer mug.
But most of the festival's guests did not have the
patience, and filled their mugs long before the mayor.
In the last several years production of beer in Russia has
increased significantly and reached the level of 30 litres per
person a year. But the Russian beer producers are sure there
is still scope for improvement.
Knowing Russians love for alcohol and the Russian
tradition to celebrate any event, sad or merry, by getting
drunk - the local beer producers are confident that they can
increase the yearly beer consumption in Russia to 70 litres
per person by the end of next year. And the Moscow
beer-festival is good proof of that.
