- Story Text: Egyptians condemn involvement of Egyptian man in
London's attacks.
Egypt's Interior Ministry said on Friday (July 15, 2005)
an Egyptian man wanted by British police in connection with
last week's London bombings had been arrested and was being
questioned.
A ministry statement said 33-year-old chemistry student
Magdy Elnasher had returned to Egypt for 45 days of holiday
from his studies and had intended to return to Britain
Egyptians in downtown Cairo found it difficult to accept
that one of their people was involved in the London attacks.
Many of them condemned the attacks saying that they
would harm the image of Islam.
"Terror is not going to help Islam, in the contrary it
is going to harm the picture of Islam.
What about those innocent people that died? This is not
going to help Islam," Said Ali Mansour at Cairo market.
"Whoever committed this act (attacks) can't be a real
Egyptian," Shawqi Mohamad added.
Elnasher has denied any link to the attacks, which
killed at least 54 and wounded 700, the ministry statement
said but did not say when or where Elnasher had been
detained.
A security source in the Interior Ministry said he had
come to Egypt before the attacks.
