- Story Text: France pays tribute to sodiers killed in the two
World Wars.
The bugle that once sounded in 1918, first relaying
news to soldiers in the trenches of the cease-fire to World
War I, sounded again in Paris on Tuesday (November 11) at
the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, as France and other nations
held remembrance ceremonies in honour of their fallen
heroes.
On the 85th anniversary of the end of World War I,
French President Jacques Chirac, together with other
government officials and war veterans observed a moment's
silence in honour of known and unknown soldiers who fought
in the World Wars.
Of the 8.4 million Frenchmen called to arms, 1.35
million died, leaving 600,000 widows. The toll was 1.7
million dead in both Germany and Russia, 900,000 in Britain
and 116,000 in the United States. At least 20 million
people were wounded.
