- Story Text: Overweight women in Thailand are sending a message to
the world -- size does matter.
Weighing 100 kilograms and dancing her way to the title,
Sirintharika Santhisiri has been crowned Thailand's new "Jumbo
Queen 2002".
The 7th annual "Jumbo Queen", set up to honour the
woman who most ably exhibits the characteristics of an
elephant, was held at Samphran Elephant Zoo on Wednesday
(May 1).
Most of the final 22 participants weighed-in at anywhere
between 80 and 180 kilograms.
To win the prestigious title requires more than just being
overweight, other talents like playing musical instruments and
dancing are taken into account.
Sirintarika Santisiri, or Yui, won the overall competition
by graciously dancing on stage, impressing judges with her
overall appearance.
The contest is designed to highlight efforts to preserve
Thailand's endangered elephant population.
The title of Jumbo Queen is the highlight of the
competition and the winner is convinced that by winning a
title she will be able to raise awareness about the plight of
Thai elephants.
At the same time, the competition is an opportunity for
many overweight ladies to show their skills and prove that
life can be fun, and people can be beautiful, even if they
don't look like the skinny supermodels in fashion magazines.
Newly crowned winner, Sirintharika Santhisiri told
Reuters, "I feel much better on this stage. As I've told you I
have applied for another (regular) beauty contest, but I
didn't show up. I was afraid I would be the only big one in
the middle of the stage... My legs would look like table
legs."
The secret to her beauty and grace lies in daily exercise,
combined with meditation.
On the fringe of this year's "Jumbo Queen" competition, a
smaller contest for Thailand's heaviest woman was also held.
The proud winner, 191-kilogram Lalita Shongraj smiled at
the cameras, firmly holding her hard-won trophy.
