I live in New York City, I was there on 9-11, and of course we had the Towers of Light on the sixth month anniversary, and it was so emotional then and to be here in another country and have this response to show the solidarity with what happened, it's just very, very touchy." 1.26 5. - Story Text: Two beams of light rising above the Paris skyline have
been lit to commemorate those killed during the September 11
attacks.
To celebrate the memory of those killed during the
September 11 attacks on the first anniversary of the
tragedies, the giant beams of light were lit at 22pm local
time on Tuesday (10 september) in the interior courtyards of
the Paris town hall.
The memorial lights, which will stay on until dawn and
then again during Wednesday night, were created to replicate
the great beams of light that rose from Ground Zero in New
York on March 11, the six-month anniversary of the attacks, at
the site where the World Trade Twin Towers once stood.
"Tribute of Light", as the New York creation was called,
shone each night until April 13, and was meant to remember the
towers and to celebrate the spirit of all the New Yorkers who
contributed to rebuild and renew the city.
In Paris, local residents and tourists gathered along
the streets and the
Seine river to admire the display.
"This is a message of solidarity with New York but it is
also for all those who believe in universal values in the same
way that these lights symbolise life, like the two towers, and
that barbarity cannot destroy. Destruction is provisional
because those men and women who believe in the values of life
are together beyond their differences and build towers that
make life more
beautiful", the major of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, told
journalists at the town hall.
