- Story Text: Atmosphere remains tense in the restive city of
Falluja, as U.S. forces continue to take casualties from
guerrilla-style attacks in several parts of Iraq.
U.S. soldiers continued their patrols of the restive
town of Falluja on Sunday (July 20), two days after a soldier
was killed in a guerrilla-style attack.
A soldier was killed on Friday (July 18) when his Humvee
drove over a makeshift bomb in Falluja, 50 km (30 miles) west
of Baghdad.
U.S. forces occupying Iraq have suffered almost daily
ambushes since they ousted Saddam Hussein in April.
Four U.S. soldiers were killed in the past few days. Two
U.S. soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division were killed on
Sunday when they were ambushed by guerrillas firing guns and
rocket-propelled grenades in Tall Afur, near the northern city
of Mosul.
Another soldier was killed in Baghdad while guarding a
bank on Saturday (July 19) and another in the tense Sunni town
of Falluja on Friday (July 18) afternoon.
Four U.S. soldiers were also wounded in the Rashid
district of Baghdad on Saturday morning when a home-made bomb
was detonated near their patrol, and one American soldier was
wounded when a convoy came under fire on Friday in the town of
Miqdadiya, northeast of Baghdad.
Since U.S.-led forces invaded Iraq on March 20, 151 U.S.
soldiers have been killed in hostile action -- including 37
killed in hostile action since President George W. Bush
declared major combat over on May 1.
Almost all were attacked in Baghdad or the restive Sunni
Muslim heartland to the north and west of the capital.
Washington blames Saddam loyalists for the wave of attacks
on its forces since Baghdad fell on April 9.
U.S. officials concede that their failure to find Saddam
has emboldened guerrillas attacking American forces.
An audiotape said to be made by Saddam was broadcast on
Arabic television last week, urging Iraqis to launch a jihad,
or holy struggle, to oust occupying troops.
