- Story Text: 30,000 Christian pilgrims walk to the shrine of
Fatima to mark the the first anniversary of the apparition
since the death of Pope John Paul ll.
A record number of Christian pilgrims walked to
the shrine of Fatima on Friday (May 13) to mark the
anniversary of the purported apparition of the Virgin Mary
before three shepherd children in 1917.
An estimated 30,000 people walked several days to the
Fatima sanctuary, about 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of
the capital Lisbon, coming from all over the country.
Several thousand others drove there to attend the annual
ceremony at the Fatima shrine.
"We think there are more pilgrims who walked to the
sanctuary, which we consider to be a record," said Father
Manuel Antunes.
Pilgrims applauded the surprise announcement from the
Vatican that Pope Benedict, also called Bento, had
expedited the sainthood process for his predecessor, Pope
John Paul II, who died April 2.
John Paul's death, the naming of his successor, and the
death in February of the last of the three children who
claimed to see the Virgin at Fatima, have reinvigorated the
faithful, sanctuary officials said.
"I believe the death of Pope John Paul II and the
nomination of Bento XVI marks the rebirth of spirituality
in the world," said Father Luciano Guerra, director of the
Fatima sanctuary.
Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, who claimed she and her
cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marta saw the Virgin on an
oak tree on May 13, 1917, died on February 13 at the age of
97. Her cousins had died in an influenza pandemic in 1919
and 1920.
The children claimed the Virgin appeared six times and
witnesses claimed an estimated 50,000 people saw bright
lights and rainbow colours at her last appearance.
Dos Santos, who later became a nun, also claimed to
have had a vision that foretold the attempted assassination
of Pope John Paul, which occurred on May 13, 1981.
Pope John Paul later placed one of the bullets that
nearly killed him in the crown of the statue of Fatima.
Turkish gunman Mehmet Ali Agca fired the shots in St.
Peters Square.
John Paul II loved Fatima so much that Fatima was
forced to love the Pope, Lisbon Cardinal Jose Policarpo
said in his service at Fatima.
Dos Santos also was said by believers to have received
prophecies from the Virgin about a vision of hell and the
outbreak of World War Two.
The Vatican interpreted the prophecies as foretelling
Communisms persecution of Christianity. The alleged
apparitions took place the same year as the Russian
Revolution.
Despite the creation of a more scenic, off-road path
for Fatima worshipers to use, most stuck with the old
roadway route.
