- Story Text: The Iraqi Information Ministry has taken journalists on
a tour of central Baghdad and said Iraqi troops remain in
control of the capital.
The Iraqi Information Ministry took journalists on a
tour of Baghdad on Monday (March 7, 2003), in a bid to convince
media that the Iraqis have control of the city and that
nothing is wrong.
Policemen gathered in police cars and fired off their guns
in defiance and waved Iraqi flags.
Meanwhile, in other parts of the city, ordinary Iraqis
were buying food in the street markets despite the turmoil in
other parts of the capital. The mood appeared sombre and
subdued.
Earlier, U.S. forces burst into the heart of Baghdad on
Monday (March 7) and entered two palace complexes of Iraqi
President Saddam Hussein, but they said the operation was an
armoured raid not intended to hold territory.
Iraq said the invaders were "committing suicide" on the
gates of the capital.
