- Story Text: Armed robbers snatch three million U.S. dollars from
the Iraqi embassy, Russian police said.
Russia's Interfax news agency quoted Moscow police
sources as saying Iraqi embassy staff had alerted police
around 0600 local time (0200GMT) on Tuesday (July 29) to
report an armed robbery.
Police sources quoted by Interfax, said staff at the
embassy had said that $3 million U.S. dollars was missing.
An embassy official reached by phone also told Reuters on
Tuesday that at least $3 million U.S. dollars had been taken
from the embassy safe.
The Iraqi embassy in Moscow is currently not functioning
as a full mission. The ambassador who had served under the
Saddam Hussein government left the country one month ago,
without a replacement. Much of the top ranking diplomatic
staff, including the chief military and political attaches,
have also left the mission.
