- Story Text: Tens of thousands march in Washington, protesting
against the US presence in Iraq
Tens of thousands of anti-war demonstrators marched
peacefully through the streets of downtown Washington, D.C.
on Saturday (October 25, 2003) calling on the Bush
Administration to bring U.S. soldiers home and end the US
occupation in Iraq.
Busloads of demonstrators came from approximately 145
cities across the United States, among them college
students, Vietnam War veterans, and families with children.
Protest organizers say the war in Iraq was unjustified
and that the U.S.-led pre-emptive strike was based on
exaggerated documentation of Iraq's threat to use weapons
of mass destruction against the U.S. Organizers point to a
recent report released by a Congressional panel
investigation that questions the truth of pre-war CIA
intelligence on the former Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein
and Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities..
Civil rights activist and Democratic presidential
candidate, Reverend Al Sharpton who was among the marchers
said the premise for going to war was flawed.
" We need to pull the troops out", he said. " We need to
submit to Kofi Annan and the U.N. and let them in a
multi-lateral way decide how to rebuild and reorder the
Iraqi government."
Hundreds of police lined the route past the White
House. There were no reported clashes during the
demonstration.
One marcher, Ruth Ann Dunn of Vermont said she
travelled 14 hours to march in the protest.
"I've been against war for years," she said. "It's
never the answer. And I was disappointed that we went to
war. I think the amount of money that's going to maintain
essentially our occupation seems to be limitless. Yet, when
it comes to domestic needs like better health insurance for
people and prescription drugs for the elderly we don't seem
to have any money for that."
The march ended at its rallying point back on the
National Mall before demonstrators dispersed. A similar
rally took place in San Francisco, California. .
