- Story Text: The luxury liner, France, sailed into the French port, Le Havre, on Wednesday (9 October) after her crew decided to end their month-long sit-in at sea. Cheering crowds welcomed the ship, while crew members chanted "the fight goes on".
The crew, who have been protesting about a Government decision to withdraw the ship from service on October 25, voted to end their occupation of the ship and leave a 121-man "security force" aboard even after docking at Le Havre.
Their decision came after an agreement was reached between their union officials and the Government to allow them to continue their strike.
But the key issue -- the future of the ship -- has yet to be settled. The world's longest vessel, which made her final trans-Atlantic crossing early last month, was seized by her crew on September II. After blocking the entrance to Le Havre, they later moved the ship to St. Vaast La Houge, near Cherbourg, to shelter from Channel storms.
The crew, who were met by union representatives on their arrival, will continue their talks with the officials on their next move.
