- Story Text: Britain has been hit with snow as more cold temperatures
arrived in Western Europe and London recorded its
largest snowfall for nearly 12 years.
The Queen's residence Buckingham Palace was covered in
a blanket of snow on Wednesday morning (January 8) as central
London was hit with about two inches of snow - the largest
fall since February 1991.
The bad weather hit eastern parts of England and was
heading westwards causing "hit and miss" snow showers across
the country.
During a night there was a heavy frost and residents in
the North East, East Anglia and the South East woke up to a
covering of snow, which was particularly heavy around Essex.
Londoners and tourists alike enjoyed the unusual weather
conditions in the capital.
"It really is my first time, it's white and it's pretty
and it's cold and everyone seems in a bit of a playful mood so
it's not bad," said one Australian tourist.
It was a nice change for tourists in London to see snow
rather than rain.
"This is the first time I've been in proper snow, where
it's settled on the ground, we don't get much snow in
Australia," said Rob, another Australian.
"I'm really enjoying it but it's very very cold," he
added.
Temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing in
England and Wales on Wednesday, but the extreme cold
temperatures should ease over the next couple of days.
Britain struggled to cope with the cold snap as it
affected the roads and railways. On mainline railways, a
combination of the severe weather and signalling problems led
to delays for many travellers.
On Tuesday (January 7), thousands of rail passengers were
delayed when the combination of freezing temperatures and
signalling failures brought severe disruption to the network.
