- Story Text: Coach Marco Van Basten says the Dutch will play to
win but recommends caution as they finish preparations for
World Cup qualifier away in Romania.
The Netherlands made their final training on Friday
(March 25) ahead of their World Cup in Romania.
Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy joined
Chelsea Arjen Robben as both returned from
long injury periods with their clubs to play for the
national side.
One point separates the top four teams in Europe's
World Cup qualifying Group One and they go head
to head on Saturday (March 25) when Romania host the
Netherlands in Bcharest and Finland visit the Czech
Republic.
They are two of 17 games on Saturday, with a further 21
next Wednesday, as the qualifying campaign for Germany 2006
moves beyond the halfway point.
Romania last reached a major tournament at Euro 2000
and the man who led them then, coach Victor Piturca, is
back at the helm for his second stint having returned to
the job in December.
Piturca has called up a host of veterans for Saturday's
clash, including 37-year-old midfielder Dorinel Munteanu
and 32-year-old Viorel Moldovan - a few weeks after he had
announced his retirement from football.
Dutch coach Marco van Basten has taken the opposite
approach by calling up uncapped Hedwiges Maduro and Ryan
Babel to his squad.
At a news conference at Rapid Bucharest stadium where
the match will be played, Van Basten said his team would
not adopt a cautious approach against Romania.
"We always want to win. That's the first thing we have in our
mind.
Also we know is a very difficult opponent but
at least we'll try to win."
Both teams have 10 points but Romania have taken one
point from their last two games and cannot afford another
slip against a Dutch side who have a game in hand.
Van Basten said that despite chasing three points, he
has a lot of respect for his opponents.
"The last 10 years Romania had a good few squads, good
players. So, it's always a very dangerous oppponent and we
need to be very careful tomorrow."
Finland have played five games for their nine points
and visit a Czech side who have won all three games since
opening their campaign with a 2-0 loss to the Dutch.
