- Story Text: Vatican says Pope is recovering.
Catholics in Rome said on Friday (February 4) they
were hopeful Pope John Paul would be strong enough to
address Roman Catholic faithful this Sunday from his suite
at the Gemelli hospital in Rome.
The pope spent a third night at the hospital after he
was rushed there on Tuesday suffering from a flu and
breathing difficulties. Since then, the hospital has become
the centre of media attention from around the world.
Well wishers arrived at the hospital gates and flowers
were delivered to the frail Pontiff.
On Friday Romans continued to wish their beloved Pope a
steady recovery.
"He must recover. He needs to pray for all the sick
people," said Assunta, a relative of a patient at the
hospital.
"I really hope he recovers soon, we need him greatly,"
said another visitor.
"I hope he is going to make it and carry out the
Angelus on Sunday. I am sure he wants to," said Ignazio
Marino, a patient at the hospital.
In a brief statement on Thursday, the Vatican said the
84-year-old Pontiffs throat ailment was in regression and
that he had not suffered any further spasms.
The Holy Fathers general condition and his respiratory
condition are evolving positively, the statement said.
Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls told reporters
that medical tests had produced satisfactory results and
that the next bulletin would be issued at noon (1100 GMT)
on Friday.
Vatican sources said the Pope would almost certainly
make an address from the hospital on Sunday at noon, the
time he normally delivers his weekly blessing in St Peters
Square.
