- Story Text: Souvenirs of the legendary Concorde, including the
pointed nose, have gone under the hammer in Paris.
Christie's auctioneers have sold more than 200 parts
belonging to the Concorde on Saturday (November 15) for a
total close to 3,300,000 euros.
Everything from the supersonic jet's instruction manual
to the engine went under the hammer in an auction held in
Paris.
Concorde was put into retirement last month as already
high running costs escalated after an Air France Concorde
crashed in July 2000, killing 113 people. Plane-maker
Airbus this year sealed the jet's fate, saying it would
stop supplying parts and maintenance.
Since November 7, the curious have had a chance to
wander around exhibits which included wheels and doors as
well as the china place settings which the world's rich and
famous used while crossing the Atlantic at over 2,000 kph.
The proceeds of the sale will go to the charitable Air
France foundation, which supports various children's causes.
The cabin mach-meter, which allowed passengers to track
the speed of the jet as it broke through the sound barrier,
was estimated to sell at 1,500 euros to 2,000 euros, and
ended going for 94,000 euros. The pointed nose gathered
420,000.
At the lower end of the price range, some pipes and
tools could find a new home for less than 100 euros, well
below the price of a return ticket over the Atlantic, for
which passengers had to pay over $11,000.
Global media and thousands of Concorde fans around the
world watched the supersonic airliner complete its last
commercial flight over the Atlantic last month.
In Britain, British Airways Concorde souvenirs will be
up auctioned on December 1, with prices ranging from 30
pounds ($50) to 35,000 pounds.
