- Story Text: A large funeral was held early on Wednesday (June 29, 2005) for slain
lawmaker Dhari Ali al-Fayadh where Iraqi forces fired into the air.
A suicide car bomber struck a convoy and killed lawmaker Dhari Ali
al-Fayadh along with his son and three bodyguards on Tuesday (June 28), making
him the second member of Iraq's parliament assassinated since a new government
took power in April.
He was the oldest member of parliament and had served as its speaker on
the first day it gathered after elections in January.
The funeral was held under tight security measures as a number of Iraqi
army and police forces in vehicles escorted the motorcade as it drove down
Baghdad streets heading for the shi'ites' holy city of Najaf for burial. A
number of the roads were blocked with more security as Iraqi troops deployed
along the roads.
A large crowd of relatives and members of Fayadh's tribe also took
part in the funeral. They marched through the streets, carrying flags and
shouting mourning chants.
The Iraqi wing of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda group claimed
responsibility on a Web site for the attack.
Relatives of an Iraqi journalist who was killed by the U.S. forces
participated in a funeral procession for him in Baghdad on Wednesday (June
29.)
On Tuesday, the U.S. soldiers gunned down the Iraqi journalist Ahmed
Wael al-Bakri who worked for al-Sharqiya TV channel in his car while on way to
his house in Amiriya neighbourhood, western Baghdad.
"He was in his car on way to visit his wife's family and U.S.
convoy was in front of his car. They opened fire at him. They shot at him with
17 bullets, two of them killed him. The car was completely destroyed,"
said Amjad Wael al-Bakri, brother of the slain journalist.
A U.S. military spokesman said he was unaware of the incident.
