- Story Text: The worlds most expensive player Zinedine Zidane joined
his new team mates of the Real Madrid for the clubs pre-season
training in Switzerland.
Hundreds of fans gathered to watch Reals $66 million
investment step on to the field of Nyons Colovray Stadium and
train alongside Brazilian player Roberto Carlos and Portuguese
Luis Figo, the man who had edged him into second place as
European Player of the Year.
The team trained for more than three hours under an
intense sun.
The Spanish champions first match is on Friday (July 27)
when they are
due to play Lausanne in a match in honour of former IOC
president Juan Antonio Samaranch.
Real's $66 million investment stepped on to the pitch at
the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to give the thumbs up to the
massed ranks of photographers, briefly juggled with the ball
and posed with a few of the children who had been fortunate
enough to be allowed into the stadium to witness the arrival
of their new idol.
The World Player of the Year cut a relaxed and easy-going
figure as he spoke to the media in French, admitting that his
main objective at his new club was to secure the one major
medal that is missing from his already impressive collection.
The balding midfielder said it was a real honour for him
to play alongside Luis Figo, the man who had edged him into
second place as European Player of the Year.
Brazilian player Roberto Carlos spoke about the new season
ahead and his new team mate.
"Strong. We are starting the season. It was a good
training. He is a great player. I wish him luck.
"The obligation is the same. There are always new players
who join in
but the Real (Madrid) has always to win," Carlos said.
Zidane, who will be sporting the number five shirt worn in
his last season by the club's former captain Manuel Sanchis.
Zidane also said that he believed the Spanish league may
give him a better chance to showcase his skills than the more
defensive Serie A.
"It (the training) was very good. It was not the first
time I train with them. It is the second. I am happy to be
with them. They have welcomed me just as I thought they would.
Now its up to me to get integrated slowly," he said.
