- Story Text: Long lines of taxis and trucks protesting against high
fuel prices have caused traffic chaos in Frankfurt and in the
north western town of Kiel.
Protesting taxi drivers and lorry drivers continued
their protests across Germany on Wednesday (September 20).
Motorcades of taxis disrupted traffic causing massive
traffic jams in Kiel.
Meanwhile in Frankfurt 30 or 40 lorries joined the
dispute. Between 100 and 200 vehicles had been expected.
The German government continued to play for time amid
calls to cancel an upcoming petrol tax increase and a morning
cabinet meeting did not even include the crisis on the agenda.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who has adopted a low
public profile in recent days, met Finance Minister Hans
Eichel to review the impact of a possible increase in tax
deductions for drivers, a spokesperson said.
