- Story Text: Businesses closed down in Baghdad on Tuesday, as the
count down to a U.S.-led war against Iraq began.
A group of peace activists chained themselves to the gates
of the United Nations Development Programme offices in Baghdad
to protest against the war.
Businesses in Baghdad were closed on Tuesday (March 18)
as the count down to a U.S-led war against Iraq began.
The busy streets of Baghdad were quiet on Tuesday morning,
as most people stayed at home in anticipation of U.S.-led
bombing raids. A few people, including a watch repairer,
carried on with their chores oblivious of the impending raids.
"Our principles and doctrine says the Almighty God who
created us will guide us and decide our destiny, not Bush.
There's a God bigger than Bush," said one Baghdad resident,
Khaled Salih.
"We tell Bush that we'll defend our country with all
available means, and we'll defend it with our faith," another
Iraqi, Hussein Kadhim, told Reuters Television.
In what is fast becoming a futile attempt by peace
activists to avert war, a group protested, standing in chains
in front of the United Nations Develpoment Programme offices
in the Iraqi capital.
The activists arrived in the country to show solidarity
with the people of Iraq. Some have deployed to civilian sites
in and around Baghdad to stop any bombings.
