- Story Text: An estimated 35,000 Borussia Dortmund fans in Germany watched their
team narrowly lose to Feyenoord in the UEFA Cup Final hundreds
of miles away in the Netherlands.
The fans watched the game on a large video screen in
Dortmund's stadium on Wednesday night (May 8, 2002).
German police said they did not count on such a high
turnout of spectators and that a second stand had to opened
to accommodate demand to see the game being played in
Rotterdam.
Striker Pierre van Hooijdonk struck two first-half goals as
Feyenoord beat 10-man Borussia Dortmund 3-2 to win the UEFA
Cup for the second time after an entertaining final.
The Dutch team had to survive a superb second-half
comeback from Dortmund who were reduced to 10 men in the 31st
minute when defender Juergen Kohler was sent off in the last
game of his career.
But the Dutch team were under pressure for the rest of the
match after Dortmunds Czech forward Jan Koller hit a brilliant
right-footed shot into the top left-hand corner from outside
of the area in the 58th minute.
The victory marked the first European triumph for a Dutch
club for seven seasons after Ajax Amsterdam won the European
Cup in 1995.
