France flew a planeload of United Nations aid into
eastern Chad on Wednesday (August 4) where French soldiers
prepared to deploy from their base in Abeche towards the
border with Sudan's Darfur region.
"We're in Abeche, our mission is to secure the area
where the refugee camps are, on the edge of Darfur. And at
the same time we're facilitating the arrival of aid for
these refugee camps. So as you can see behind as, as is the
case on a normal security mission, our airforce go on
photographic recognition missions. And at the same time we
have patrols along the border and around the refugee camps,
whose mission is to evaluate the situation, and if need be
to protect the refugees. So the elements you can see are
intervention elements ready to come in in the case of
danger, in addition to the troops we have already deployed
here," said the commander of the French battalion in Chad.
According to the United Nations refugee agency the
French military has airlifted tons of humanitarian supplies
to the town of Abeche remote east to bring relief to the
estimated 200,000 people seeking shelter and safety there
from the violence engulfing Sudan's Darfur region, the
today.
Aircraft carrying medical kits, fuel bladders,
communications equipment and other relief items have been
shuttling between the Chadian capital, N'Djamena, and
Abeche since Saturday (July 31), UN High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis said.
