- Story Text: The German military have announced they have accepted a
request from the United Nations to present the Luna spy plane,
for an eventual use by the UNMOVIC team.
On Tuesday (February 11, 2003), German military presented
the Luna plane to the media.
They outlined its exceptional performances. The plane
flies as far as 80 kilometres per hour, and can stay in the
air up to four hours. But its main advantages over other
models is that it transmits pictures in real time.
German military said it has many other advantages.
"The main advantage of the plane is that it takes pictures
with a great precision, in colour and delivers them in
real-time. It has other many smaller advantages, such as
mobility, or the fact that its takes are recorded on video -
which is very important for verification purposes," Lieutenant
Klaus-Joerg Himstedt said.
The German army has used the plane for the last three
years, mainly in reconnaissance missions over Kosovo and
Macedonia. The Luna planes flew over four hundred
reconnaissance missions.
It can be used for military missions, as well as civilian
missions such as borders control or surveillance of ecological
subjects.
