- Story Text: At the Philippines Commission on Election (COMELEC) head-quarters in Manila yesterday, results of the July 27 - 28 national referendum were officially announced.
Before a large number of high ranking government officials, the election commission's Chairman, Leonardo Parez, announced that more than 18 million Filipinos cast votes in favour of the continuation of President Marcos' rule beyond 1973. That figure represented more than 90 per cent of the votes cast in last week's referendum.
In this proclamation, Mr. Perez said that the vote counting stopped yesterday afternoon with votes from 54,000 polling centres counted. He also announced that the Commission was convinced that the referendum was free, orderly and peaceful.
The results of the referendum does not speel out a specific term in office for President Marcos. This could be the subject of another referendum in the future. Under the old constitution, President Marcos would be forced to resign from office after his second term at the end of this year.
