- Story Text: The 34th Ryder Cup finally got under way at The Belfry
on Friday (September 27) after three years of waiting.
This week's competition was scheduled to be held at the
same venue last year but was postponed for 12 months following
the September 11 attacks on the U.S.
As World No 1 Tiger Woods and the rest of the American
team prepared to take on Europe's best golfers, armed police
were deployed to help ensure their safety and that of fans.
Spectators at the 34th Ryder Cup, being held at The Belfry
in north Warwickshire over three days, have even been banned
from carrying mobile phones or cameras.
Organisers said up to 1,200 marshals, security guards and
police would be on duty around the course, which is covered by
CCTV.
Police have also assigned uniformed officers to escort
every player around the course. Roads in the immediate
vicinity of The Belfry have been closed to private cars and
taxis.
Spectators are screened with airport-style metal detectors
and their bags passed through X-Ray machines.
The U.S., who hold the trophy after their victory by
14-1/2 points to 13-1/2 at Brookline in 1999, have won 24
times in the 75-year history of the biennial competition.
Britain (or Europe since 1979) have won seven matches and
two have been tied.
After the controversy surrounding the hostile crowd
reaction to the European team the last time the tournament was
held in the United States, spectators at the Belfry said the
atmosphere was more calm and subdued.
