- Story Text: Pop icon Michael Jackson has donated a jacket to a
German charity in support of homeless children at an auction
in Berlin, fetching 16,000 euro (16,050 U.S dollars).
Michael Jackson attended the "Tribute To Bambi" in
Berlin Wednesday night (November 20, 2002), a charity event
supporting homeless children in Germany.
Jackson announced he would found the Michael Jackson
Foundation for homeless children in Germany.
The jacket Michael Jackson donated was custom-made for his
appearance in the 29th American Music Awards at the Los
Angeles Shrine Auditorium as he declared the "Artist of the
Century."
German music producer Ralph Siegel was the lucky winner of
the jacket.
"Im really glad to be here in Berlin tonight to support
the Tribute To Bambi, the charity of the Hubert Burda media.
I'm glad to give back some of the love I received...to the
children," Jackson told a cheering crowd.
On Thursday night, Jackson was to receive the "Millennium
Bambi," honouring him as "the greatest living pop icon with a
big heart," according to the sponsors of the award, German
Burda publishing group.
"Bambi" is Germanys answer to the Oscars, Emmys and
Grammys.
The annual award honours people from all fields of
entertainment, literature, sports and politics, according to
Burda.
Earlier on Wednesday Jackson wore a dark suit and
sunglasses as he strolled through Berlin's zoo with his
children, who wore red veils, reportedly to protect them from
becoming a target of kidnappers.
They were escorted throughout the day by a convoy of a
dozen security guards, some of whom held up umbrellas to
thwart photographers. 'No pictures today', a guard said
repeatedly.
Jackson visited the zoos famous monkey house for about 15
minutes and paused to inspect one of the gorillas. The zoo
allowed Jackson's entourage to drive into the zoo directly to
the monkey house.
