- Story Text: Mortar rounds land near Italian Embassy in Baghdad,
wounding several Iraqis, but no diplomatic staff. At least
one person dead.
Iraqi police and embassy staff said the mortar
rounds which landed near the Italian embassy in Baghdad on
Thursday (June 3), wounded several Iraqis but no embassy
staff.
A doctor at the hospital compound, Medical City, said
they had received one dead body and one injured man who was
in a critical condition.
Haitham al-Fadel, a guard at the embassy, said six
people, including three children, were wounded when the
mortars fell on a nearby restaurant and a house in the
northern Baghdad neighbourhood.
An employee at the embassy said no staff were wounded.
Insurgents have attacked the area around the Italian
embassy several times in recent months, mostly causing only
minor damage. Last year the embassy was hit by a
rocket-propelled grenade.
Italy has about 2,700 troops in Iraq and its nationals
have regularly been targeted by insurgents because of the
country's participation in the U.S.-led coalition.
In April, four Italians working for a private U.S.
security firm were kidnapped. One was killed two days later
after Italy refused to give in to demands to withdraw its
forces from Iraq. The other three remain in captivity.
Last year, a car bomb blew up headquarters for Italian
forces in the southern city of Nassiriya, killing 19
Italians.
