- Story Text: Nepalese authorities have reimposed a curfew on the
streets of the capital Kathmandu despite a calm morning as
they try to avoid a repeat of violent clashes between police
and protesters demanding to know the truth behind the
mysterious palace shootout.
The overnight curfew was lifted at dawn on Tuesday,
but another of 12 hours ordered for noon (0630 GMT) as the new
king began the difficult task of winning over his people.
State radio said the curfew was imposed after some people
tried to block traffic and disturb law and order.
Authorities said at least two people were killed and 19
others injured in riots on Monday, just hours after King
Gyanendra was crowned.
Gyanendra pledged the public would be given full details
within days of the bloodbath which killed his brother, King
Birendra, the Queen and six other members of the royal family
and left his younger brother and the Crown Prince fatally
wounded.
Authorities said four other members of the royal family,
including the new queen, were in hospital being treated for
their injuries.
The streets emptied after the curfew -- which authorities
have said gives the police the right to shoot violators --
leaving Nepalis with little to do but sit and wait.
People sat on balconies or peered out of windows from
their homes, deprived even of the opportunity to watch popular
cable television programmes from neighbouring India.
A handful of European tourists braved the early morning
streets - with one man saying he found the whole situation
confusing.
"We have to stay in our hotel its very confusing the
situation," he said, taking the opportunity to walk the
streets in morning daylight.
The crisis in Nepal also left hundreds of tourists
stranded as the curfews disrupted air travel out of the
country.
"I don't know why we are waiting. If we go into town it
is not possible because of the curfew, if we go by escort we
might lose out ticket. We are scared, I don't know what to
do," said one European woman stranded at Kathmandu's
International Airport.
The United States and Britain have issued travel warnings
to their citizens, while Japan and Australia have urged
travellers to avoid demonstrations and gatherings.
