- Story Text: Greece was re-admitted to the Council of Europe on Thursday (28 November). It had originally quit the Council five years ago when it was faced with suspension because of the repressive policies of the former military regime.
Foreign Ministers of the eighteen members of the Council now meeting in Paris, voted unanimously to re-admit Greece following the recent elections held there. They agreed that the free elections showed that Greece met the principles of human rights and fundamental freedoms that are a condition of Council membership.
Greek Foreign Minister Dimitri Bitsios took the seat on the Council which Greece had vacated in December 1969 and signed the Council's Convention on Human Rights.
The Council discussed the Cyprus conflict for the first time in the presence of Greek representatives. The Turkish Foreign Minister boycotted the debate in protest against the Council's refusal to hear Mr. Rauf Denktash, head of the Turkish-Cypriots, during the debate.
