Former tennis world number one Yevgeny Kafelnikov
will be making his debut on the European Golf tour at the
Russian Open on Thursday (August 11), after gaining a
wild-card entry from the tournament organisers.
Kafelnikov, the former French Open and Australian Open
champion, retired from professional tennis last year. In a
12-year tennis career, Kafelnikov won 26 singles titles.
After a year out of the professional tennis circuit,
and so looking a little heavier, Kafelnikov played a
practice round at the Moscow Country Club on Wednesday
(August 10). The MCC is the venue for the Russian Open.
Kafelnikov who has a golf handicap of 2, said he
enjoyed playing the game.
"I have been playing golf for 11 years, unfortunately
not as much as I love to but right now when I quit my
active job of being a tennis professional I would love to
spend more time on a golf course," said Kafelnikov.
He added that he was looking forward to playing in the
Russian Open, though he laughed a question about the
chances of winning his first professional golf title.
"No, this is out of the question, the most important
thing for me tomorrow is to have fun and probably not to
disappoint my partners," added Kafelnikov, though he said
he knew the MCC course very well.
Asked about professional tennis, Kafelnikov admitted he
missed the game, but he added that he had no regrets and
was proud of what he had managed to achieve in tennis.
"Ah, a little bit, not as much as before; I watch
occasionally and I follow the game, but you know,
unfortuantely for me, my best days are gone by, you know, I
don't want to look back on what I could have done, I could
have achieved. You know, I am pretty happy with what I
accompalished in the game of tennis," said Kafelnikov.
