- Story Text: Some 300 Marks and Spencers employees have protested
on the streets of Paris demanding better severance terms and
better salaries. The company is due to close its 18 French
branches putting some 1,700 people out of work.
French Marks and Spencer workers demonstrated in Paris
on Tuesday (June 26) to protest against the 1,700 lay-offs
announced by the British management.
M&S workers are denouncing the British retailer's attitude
and the collapse of last weeks talks.
The protestors have asked the management for compensation
following its decision to withdraw from France. They are
asking Marks and Spencer a payment of 12,000 French Francs
(1,560 United States dollars) for every employee, a demand
which has been rejected by the management.
Management offered instead a payment of 3,500 francs and a
wage increase of 4.5 percent and various other bonuses.
M&S workers will keep up the pressure on management with
plans for protest during summer.
The demonstration coincides with the start of the sales
during which all stores around France are making a huge
turnover.
