- Story Text: The draw for the Eurobasket 2001 championships was
held in Istanbul, Turkey on Monday (February 26).
Former basketball stars came to assist with the draw
held at the Ciragan Hotel in Istanbul for the 16-nation
finals. The competition was last held in France in 1999 where
Italy took the title, with Spain runners-up and Yugoslavia
third.
Italy will begin their defence in Group D, playing against
Russia, Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Many experts believe
that Eurobasket will be keenly contested with no clear
favourite.
"It's a strong group," said the Spanish representative,
talking about Spain's opponents in Group B which include the
hosts. "We have Slovenia and Latvia, they are very good teams
also. I think all the four teams have the same chance to be
the first three positions for the next round."
Turkish team coach Aydin Ors said that to determine the
winners now was quite impossible.
"These are teams with very few differences," he said. "It
depends on how strong the team is at the championship. When
you look at the 1999 tournament, you saw very important teams
out of classifying. We saw them out of the first eight even
the first four teams."
The tournament will take place between August 31 and
September 9. Groups A and B will play in the capital city
Ankara, while Group C and D will play in the Mediterranean
city of Antalya.
