- Story Text: Jazz musician, Chick Correa joined fellow members of
the Church of Scientology on Thursday in Washington to protest
a law under consideration by the French Parliament which they
believe would outlaw Scientology in France.
Nearly one hundred members of the Church of Scientology
along with representatives from different religious groups
turned out at an interfaith rally protesting the proposed
French legislation. Members of the French Parliament have
drafted a legislative ban on 172 religious movements they have
classified as cults or a threat to the government.
Scientologists argue that their inclusion on the list is
the product of an anti-Scientology bias and would create a
hostile environment for followers in France.
Jazz musician Chirck Correa encouraged the crowd to put
pressure on the French government to reconsider the ban.
"This is a ridiculous law. These are supposed to be
civilized people," Correa said.
Correa, a Scientologist said he has been banned from
performing in Germany since 1993 because of his affiliation
with Scientology.
Corrine Simon-Duneau, a Scientologist and native of France also
spoke at the rally. Simon-Duneau, a native of France moved to the United States several years ago, claiming France has become increasingly less tolerant of non-mainstream religions.
