- Story Text: Times were slow in the final practice session on Saturday (22 May) for today's (Sunday 23 May) Monaco Grand Prix. This was mainly due to occasion rain which prevented any of the drivers from bettering Jackie Stewart's 84.56 mph average in Friday's session. The first scheduled day of practice Thursday 20 May...had been rained out. The Monaco Grand Prix marks the this round of the 1971 Formula One Motor-racing World Championship. The rising, falling, and twisting Monte Carlo circuit is punishing on cars, and some of the newer and potentially faster entries such as the Matras and BRMs will be tested to the full against other longer-proven cars. The race was first held in 1929 and has been won five times in the past nine years by Britain Graham Hill. Jackie Stewart, with his recent convincing win in the Spanish Grand Prix and pole position in today's Monaco event, is strongly favoured by writers to come home first. His lap time of one minute 23.2 seconds, which won pole position, equalled the record set by last years' winner, the late Jochen Rindt. Jacky Ickx, Jo Siffert, and Chris Amon all drove well in final practice to ensure positions in the front two rows of the grid.
SYNOPSIS: Monaco, where Britain's Jackie Stewart in a Tyrell-Ford and other drivers in the third round of the 1971 Formula One Motor-racing Championship spent an anxious time in practice prior to Sunday's race. The first practice session last Thursday had been abandoned because of heavy rain, and as this final session got under way on Saturday, rain was still preventing fast times.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise passes in his V-12 Matra. He and the other drivers were battling to beat Stewart's best time the day before, when the record lap average of 84.56 miles an hour...established by last year's winner, the late Jochen Rindt...was equalled.
The first race on the treacherous Monte Carlo circuit was held in 1929. Jackie Stewart with his fastest time in practice...and recent win in the Spanish Grand Prix...was the clear pre-race favourite. Other drivers, such as Jacky Ickx of Belgium, seen hers, were however in top form and likely to provide an exciting finish.
