- Story Text: Indonesia fears death toll may reach as high as
25,000.
Dead bodies still littered the towns across Indonesia's
Aceh province on Tuesday (December 28, 2004) as fears rose
that more than 25,000 people may have been killed in the
country by Sunday's (December 28) earthquake and tsunami.
"I have seen myself that almost all parts of the town
of Meulaboh have been destroyed. About 80 percent of
Meulaboh is now in ruins," said Vice-President Jusuf Kalla,
referring to the town nearest to Sunday's (December 26)
epicentre on the northwestern coast of Sumatra.
With official figures from the government crisis centre
put the province's deaths alone at 7,072, Kalla said the
total Indonesian death toll could reach 25,000.
"Up to 25,000, that number could be estimated for the
death toll. From the intensity of the damage we've seen per
square kilometre of a particular area, 25,000 is quite
plausible," said Kalla as many parts of Aceh alone had not
yet been heard from or reached by rescue crews.
Soldiers and volunteers struggled to collect the huge
number of corpses left unattended for mass burial in
several towns and cities in a bid to prevent disease in the
province.
The wall of water up to 10 metres (33 ft) high that
followed the magnitude 9.0 quake has killed more than
38,000 people across Asia.
