- Story Text: Ethiopia celebrated the 43rd anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie on Friday (November 2nd). A national holiday for the country, the day began in Addis Ababa, the capital, with a thanksgiving service at the St. George Cathedral. Distinguished guests on the occasion included Cyprus President Archbishop Makarios, and President Dr. Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senega.
Following the service, the three Heads of State drove to Parliament, where the Emperor addressed a special session, in which he cited achievements of the country's third five-year plan. He listed massive government projects, aid for new industrial investment, and improvement of agriculture.
The day was also marked by the awarding of the 1973 Hails Selessie Trust Prizes. President Senghor received an award of 70,000 Ethiopian dollars (GPB14,000 sterling), a gold medal and a diploma. Dr. Richard Pankhurst, Director of the Institute of Ethiopian studies at Addis Ababa University, received 15,000 Ethiopian dollars (GPB sterling), a gold medal and a diploma.
At another ceremony outside parliament, the Emperor and his guests reviewed the Imperial Body Guard, marking its 57th anniversary.
Emperor Hails Selassie has been in power longer than any other Head of Stats. His long reign was noted for Ethiopia's first constitution, which he proclaimed nine months after his coronation in 1031, and his determined resistance to the Italian invasion of his country in 1936. He is said to be the 225th monarch in the nation's dynastic line.
