- Story Text: Renewed clashes erupted in Baghdad's teeming Shi'ite
slum of Sadr City, meanwhile two guards were killed in
clashes between insurgents and U.S. forces northeast of
Baghdad.
Militiamen loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada
al-Sadr clashed for the second day with the U.S. forces in
Baghdad's sprawling Shi'ite neighbourhood on Sunday (June
20) night.
Flares were seen lighting the night sky over the city,
home to over two million people as sounds of gunfire and
explosions echoed throughout the city.
Militiamen carrying assault rifles crouched behind
buildings in the dark streets of the cities firing volleys
of bullets.
Explosions and attacks continued on Monday (June 21) as
a number of U.S. armoured vehicles took positions in the
main street of the city.
The region is a frequent scene of unrest as gunfights
with U.S. forces often break out in Sadr City, the young
cleric's main power base in Baghdad.
In Baquba, two guards of the social care department
were killed during a gunbattle between insurgents and U.S.
forces on Sunday.
Head of the social care department accused the U.S.
forces of entering the building and clashing with the
guards of the building.
The building of the social care department was
pockmarked with bullet holes and floor was stained with
blood.
Medical sources at Diyala province said one of the
guards died of wounds sustained from the same type of
weapons used by U.S. forces.
There was no immediate comment from the U.S. army.
Baquba, a largely Sunni Muslim area that formed a core
of support for Saddam Hussein's former regime, has been the
scene of frequent clashes between coalition forces and
insurgents. The area stretches to the north and west of
Baghdad, and is part of the northern Diyala province.
Four policemen and five civilians were wounded in a
bomb explosion near a police car in the town of Baquba on
Sunday.
