- Story Text: Screen legend Sophia Loren and actor Robert De Niro
have been inducted into the Italian American hall of fame in
Washington. Loren is the first ever native Italian to receive
the accolade.
Glitz, glamour and a hint of Italiano were in the air on
Saturday (October 26), as some of America's most legendary
Italian Americans gathered to honour the achievements of
Sophia Loren and Robert De Niro.
Almost 3,000 people attended the event at the Washington
Hilton, where the actors were inducted into the Italian
American Hall of Fame. The honour is especially symbolic for
Loren, as she is the first native of Italy ever to be
inducted.
The 68-year-old actress was radiant in an elegant coral
chiffon gown.
After her induction, Loren addressed the audience, praising
her heritage and a country she has come to call home.
"These words cannot express my appreciation for being the
first native of Italy inducted into Italian American Hall of
Fame."
Singer Tony Bennett, a guest at the gala, entertained the
crowd when he serenaded the Italian beauty.
He wasn't the only one paying homage to the sex symbol.
After receiving his honours, actor Robert De Niro stood at the
podium to make a speech. But before thanking the audience, De
Niro faced the older actress and said "I love Sophia Loren."
Afterwards, De Niro said he is proud of his cultural
background and being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
"It's an honour to be inducted to the National Italian
American Hall of Fame and to share this space with such a
distinguished and honourable group. This event is held once a
year, but the National Italian American Foundation's
charitable work which helps Americans of all backgrounds is
carried out on a daily basis. It is the cultural diversity
that our parents and grandparents brought to America that is
the strength of this nation. We can all be proud of our
heritage."
Tommy Mottola, Chairman of Sony Music Entertainment, was
also at the ceremony, and received a Special Achievement
Award.
But no one could hold a candle to Loren, a once impoverished
young girl from the outskirts of Naples. While talking to
reporters at a press conference, the siren told Reuters the
honour was very important for her as both an Italian and an
American.
"This evening is very important for me, it's very important
for a personality, it's very important for all the world, it's
the first time that an Italian personality has won such an
award," she said.
Loren, whose name is synonymous with the phrase "sex
symbol", says she will be shooting a new film soon. She
received an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 1980,
and was the first to receive a Best Actress award for a
non-English speaking film.
After 100 films and a career that spans more than 50 years,
Loren proved that she still has what it takes.
