- Story Text: Thousands of Italiano were today (Monday) besieging post offices as the deadline for the payment of a special tax neared. The tax, levied on motorists, is a once-only measure designed to take 3,000,000 lire out of the Italian economy. With only one day to go before the expiration of time to pay the tax it was estimated that only one third of motorists had paid up.
In Rome yesterday (Sunday) one irate motorist burnt his car in protest against the special tax. Police later told the motorist that he was still obliged to pay the tax.
Post Offices in italy will remain open until midnight tonight to enable people to pay the tax before the dealine expires.
