- Story Text: U.N. nuclear watchdog unanimously approves a third
term for Mohamed ElBaradei as the agency's chief.
The governing board of the U.N. nuclear watchdog
unanimously approved a third term for Mohamed ElBaradei as
the agency's chief on Monday (June 13, 2005) after Washington
gave up its efforts to oust him.
The United States lost the battle to depose ElBaradei,
but it has not given up its fight against Iran's nuclear
programme, which it says is a front to develop nuclear
weapons.
Iran denies this, insisting its atomic ambitions are
limited to the peaceful generation of electricity.
Washington had said it opposed the re-appointment of
the 62-year-old Egyptian, who has run the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 1997, because it believes
U.N. agency heads should have only two terms. But U.N.
diplomats say the real reason is that the U.S. believed he
was soft on Iraq and Iran.
Diplomats at the Vienna-based IAEA denied ElBaradei had
cut a deal with the Americans to win their support for
another four-year term when the 35 nations on the IAEA
board voted.
Following his re-election ElBaradei told a news
conference he was not ready to end his two-year probe of
Iran's atomic programme.
"I am going to report that Iran has facilitated access
to nuclear material, to nuclear sites. I am going to
report that Iran has respected its commitment with regard to the
suspension of the fuel cycle activities, these are
all positive," ElBaradei said.
However, he added that Iran needed to provide more
information about its enrichment centrifuge programme.
Centrifuges are machines that purify uranium by
spinning at supersonic speeds. Tehran had concealed its
enrichment programme from the IAEA for nearly two decades
before information about it was revealed by a group of
Iranian exiles in August 2002.
