- Story Text: Mozambican rescue teams are continuing to evacuate some
200,000 people threatened by rising floodwaters, as the
government appeals for equipment to bolster the relief effort
and aid workers call for food donations.
At least 41 people have died and more than 77,000 have
lost their homes in a deluge likely to echo, but not match,
the worst floods in living memory last year, in which more
than 700 people died and 500,000 were made homeless.
The Mozambique army has been racing against time to rescue
villagers likely to be flooded by the rising waters that
threaten to destroy their houses. Some of those affected have
been reluctant to leave their homes.
On Thursday (March 1), soldiers rescued men, women and
children from Chipanga in northern Mozambique by helicopter.
Many made their way through the floodwaters to the
helicopter on foot, or in boats.
Humanitarian aid for the flood victims has started to
arrive in the country, but the Mozambican government has
appealed for 30 million U.S. dollars (USD) of aid.
Germany has sent its first aid donation of one million
German marks (472,000 USD).
Mozambican authorities and aid agencies said nearly
200,000 people were threatened after another river burst its
banks and more water was released from Cahora Bassa at the
weekend.
Two Cahora Bassa floodgates had been opened, but officials
said water was still flowing in.
About 400,000 people have been affected by floods in
Mozambique, while in Zambia, to the west, 15,000 flood victims
risk starvation, because food and aid have not reached them
for several weeks.
