- Story Text: Two men have been injured after there was hostile
confrontation between former members of the Iraqi
Industries Union and the new members.
Meanwhile hundreds of Iraqi demonstrators at al-Firdoos
square in central Baghdad have called on the United States to
honour its promise towards the Iraqi people to involve them
with the resolutions and decisions.
Instability and turmoil are still prevailing through out the
country, particularly the capital, Baghdad since the
fall of Saddam regime on April 9.
Since the fall of Baghdad to the coalition forces, three
months ago, Iraqis have come under different kinds of acts of
violence such looting, killing and kidnapping. Iraqis
attributed that to the absent of law and order.
Members of the former Industries Union clashed with the
new members accusing each other of having the right to run the
affairs of the union. The confrontation on Wednesday (July 9)
injured two of the new members.
"We had gone upstairs to negotiate with them (the former
members of the Industries Union), but they confined us in a
room and opened fire, a matter that led to the injury of one
of the members of the Democratic Islamic Revolution and one
the Union staff. Afterwards we pulled out and summoned the
American soldiers and Iraqi police to arrest them," said
Abdul-Hussein Muneeb one of the new Union members who
was at the confrontation.
U.S soldiers took away suspects from the scene.
A party called itself Iraqi Free Societ Party organised on
Wednesday (July 9) a rally. Demonstrators accused the U.S-led
coalition forces of renouncing their promises of constituting
an independent government.
"The U.S has promised us before and after war to form an
independent government, but in fact it reneged on its promises
and did not implement any of our demands. The situation has
become worse than it was before. Yes there is freedom but we
lost many things, such as security and stability," Hamid Aboud
a demonstrator said.
The demonstrators put some demands in a pamphlet they
distributed such as the formation of an independent government
and establishing justice and social stability.
They called for setting up a technocracy and government of
intellectuals away from backwardness, fanaticism and
injustice.
