- Story Text: Iraqis meet to elect representatives from districts
of Baghdad city for the National Conference.
A meeting was held in Baghdad on Sunday (July 25) to
elect representatives of Baghdad's city to the National
Conference.
Participants elected 26 people to represent the various
districts at the National Conference, including 20 men and
six women. Those elected will take part in the 1000-member
National Conference, which is scheduled to convene for the
first time at the end of the month.
Participants commended elections as a best move to
serve the Iraqi people and cement the democratic process.
"It is a participation to support the interim
government to make the election process a success to serve
the Iraqi people in co-operation with all good-loving
parties and tribal leaders that want to serve the Iraqi
people from this prospective and the best way for the
government is elections," said Abbas Obeid Nassir.
According to Judge Dar Nourddin, who supervised the
election process, Baghdad city was divided to four areas,
namely Rusafa and Kerkh areas, Sadr City and districts.
"We held elections to nominate representatives for
Baghdad's districts for the National Conference", said
Judge Bahaddin.
He said that the names of the nominees were put forward
by the advisory councils of Baghdad's districts.
A similar gathering was held at Baghdad University to
elect representatives for Rusafa side.
Chairman of the Preparatory Committee of the National
Conference, Fouad Massoum, said Iraq is determined to push
ahead with a major national conference this month, a key
step in giving Iraqis a real say in how their country is
run, despite a move by the United Nations for it to be
delayed.
The historic event, drawing together around 1,000
Iraqis from across the political and social spectrum, has the
task of selecting a 100-member National Council to
oversee the workings of Iraq's interim government until
elections next year.
Delegates will be drawn mostly from Iraq's provinces,
with around 550 people invited. Political parties,
religious, tribal and non-governmental groups will send a
further 350 people. The remaining 100 have been selected by
Massoum's 100-strong conference committee.
The conference is due to kick off around July 28 and
will last at least two or possibly three days, officials
have said, but the United Nations has suggested postponing
it until late August to allow more time to prepare for such
a large-scale gathering.
