- Story Text: Dazzling fireworks at Eiffel Tower in Paris mark end
of Bastille Day in France.
France marked the end of the national holiday
Bastille Day (July 14, 2005) with the traditional dazzling
firework display. This year the city's most celebrated
attraction, the Eiffel Tower, was the fitting backdrop for
a stunning firework show, choreographed in time to music.
Crowds of people gathered all over the city, in parks,
on bridges and on Joffre Square facing the Eiffel Tower, to
enjoy the fireworks on a balmy mid-summer evening.
Part of the firework display was as patriotic as one
would imagine on a national holiday, as the iconic Eiffel
Tower, for many a symbol of Paris and of France, was
illuminated with blue, white and red lights like a French
flag.
France is currently celebrating 'the Year of Brazil', a
celebration of all things Brazilian. The South American
country accordingly influenced much of the firework
display, as fireworks coloured green and yellow like the
Brazilian flag shot into the air above the Eiffel Tower
accompanied by Brazilian music. The Brazilian President
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was in attendance to watch the
display.
Gasps and applause rose from the crowd at the end of
each set piece during the display. Alexis Renouda, aged ten,
told Reuters Television that he particularly enjoyed
the way the fireworks were set to music. Elizabeth Ahern
from Texas in the United States stated "They were the best
fireworks I have ever seen." The display had a special
significance for Lionel, a spectator from the western
Savoie region of France: "I thought it was fantastic and
also because it's my first time in Paris, so for a first
time it was really a success. The whole display was really
very beautiful."
Bastille Day commemorates the storming by Parisians of
the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, which sparked the
beginning of the French Revolution.
