- Story Text: Relief efforts from the United States arrives for
Indonesia's tsunami-devastated Aceh province.
Relief efforts from the United States began arriving
in force for Indonesia's tsunami-devastated Aceh province.
Five U.S. Sea Hawk helicopters, from an aircraft
carrier sent to the region to help out, landed at Aceh's
provincial
capital Banda Aceh on Saturday (January 1, 2004) to help local
authorities with air-drops for survivors in cut-off
communities.
Two U.S. C130 military cargo planes also arrived on the
same day in capital Jakarta to load supplies before heading
to
the worst-hit province.
With more than 80,000 confirmed deaths, Indonesia was
hardest hit by the Asian tsunamis, and officials said the
figure may rise to over 100,000.
"I'm off the Abraham Lincoln and we just pulled in off
the coast here, we're probably about 12 miles out right
now, and we are trying to get supplies out of Banda Aceh
here at the airport and move them down to a Meulaboh," said
Captain Larry Burt, Commander of Carrier Air Wing Two.
"We've just got here we're here to help and we're gonna
keep working until the mission's done," Burt added.
The helicopters, some of which had been gutted to make
room for cargo and people, came from the U.S. Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group that anchored about
20km (12 miles) offshore and will help clear the aid
supply-line
bottleneck.
U.S. President George W. Bush, under pressure over the
pace and scale of American aid to Asian tsunami victims,
abruptly raised the U.S. contribution to $350 million on
Friday (December 31), 10 times the amount pledged just two
days earlier.
The White House also suggested U.S. assistance could
rise still higher after a delegation headed by Secretary of
State
Colin Powell tours devastated areas next week and reports
back to the president on the needs of an estimated 5
million tsunami survivors.
The $350 million sum far outstripped relief
contributions from any other country and increased total
aid pledges from
nearly 40 nations by about 28 percent to nearly 1.36
billion.
Before Friday's announcement, the biggest donors had
been Britain with $96 million and Sweden with $80 million.
