- Story Text: Guerrillas try to assassinate Baghdad's Governor.
Guerrillas tried to assassinate Baghdad's governor
on Tuesday (September 7, 2004), opening fire on his convoy and
then detonating a bomb in a van parked by the roadside,
police and government officials said.
The governor, Ali Radhi al-Haydary, was unhurt in the
attack but one bystander was killed, police added.
Guerrillas have regularly tried to assassinate senior
Iraqi officials.
Last month, a roadside bomb targeted the education
minister's convoy and a suicide car bomber targeted the
environment minister.
Both ministers survived the attacks unscathed.
Two U.S. military trucks were attacked late on Monday
(September 6) on a highway road west of Baghdad.
On Tuesday morning, one of the trucks was still
burning. It could be seen engulfed with fire and smoke
billowing from it as another truck was towed from the site
of the attack.
The U.S. military said on Tuesday that a roadside bomb
blast near Baghdad late on Monday killed one U.S. soldier
and wounded another.
It was not clear if the soldier was killed in the same
attack.
The attack will raise the official Pentagon U.S. death
toll to at least 989 since the start of the war in Iraq.
Meanwhile, a civilian was killed and two others were
wounded when a roadside bomb hit their cars in the restive
city of Baquba, 75 kilometres north of Baghdad late on
Monday (September 6).
Two cars were damaged in the attack. It was not clear
what was the target of the bomb.
Also in Baquba two national guardsmen were seriously
wounded when they tried to remove a bomb planted on the
side of the road.
"They were trying to remove a bomb when it exploded at
them," one of the guardsman said.
Baquba has been a frequent scene of attack on the U.S.
forces and Iraqis seen as cooperating with them, including
Iraqi police and the national guards.
