- Story Text: Neighbours come to terms with lives lost in Swiss flooding as clean up operations
begin after floods in parts of Bavaria.
At least one person was reported on Friday (August 26, 2005) to have died
in the floods which hit the lakeside town of Brienz, Switzerland, tearing down
eight houses.
Brienz resident Erich Bodmer spoke about his sense of gratitude for
having survived the floods. "The most important thing is that we are
alive. Over there, two people got killed and nobody can bring them back, but
my coffee maker I can buy tomorrow again. We miss our personal belongings but
they can be replaced. We live and I told those people who got nervous about
their losses that two people are dead and that is much worse than anything
that got broken. We are fine. We are alive," he said.
A second flooding victim was found drowned in a river in another town.
Heddi Bodmer described how she had to run when the floods struck. She
said: "I went to my mother's house and on the table there were still our
teacups and when the mud came we had to run."
The nearby railway has come to a halt due to swathes of mud over the
tracks and workers are trying to get electricity re-established to areas where
it has gone down.
In Kelheim in the southern German state of Bavaria, the Benedictine
abbey of Weltenburg was partially under water in Kelheim, following
floods.
On Thursday monks at the abbey had been forced to take safety in upper
floors as the River Danube flooded.
But by Friday a clean up operation was underway.
But with no rain forecast for the next few days Bavarian authorities
expect the situation to ease eventually.
Bavarian State Premier Edmund Stoiber has promised assistance of up to
2,500 euros for every affected household.
