We have prepared such a proposal and I have published it. We must work out guidelines and other details which would be correct in relation to our coalition partners. I'm convinced that we will find a proper answer that will not be viewed as a protest gesture, but will be immediately accepted by the Iraqi government and our allies." 1.43 3. - Story Text: Ukraine pledges troop withdrawal from Iraq if
opposition takes wins November election.
Ukraine will pull its troops out of Iraq if
opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko wins November 21
presidential elections.
The promise of the pro-Western former Prime Minister
Viktor Yushchenko, who won the first round of presidential
voting, comes weeks after Polish Prime Minister, Marek
Belka promised to begin withdrawing Poland's 2,400
contingent in January 2005.
Ukraine currently has about 1,600 troops in the
U.S.-led coalition. Its mission has been hotly debated in
the Ukrainian parliament.
But Yushchenko said any pullout would be planned and
carried out in a manner so as not to be viewed as a
"protest gesture" against the coalition allies.
