- Story Text: Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two men to climb
Mount Everest, has arrived in Nepal for the fiftieth
anniversary celebration of that event.
New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and his wife Lady June
Hillary arrived at Kathmandu's International Airport on Friday
(May 23, 2003) ahead of the anniversary of his ascent to the
summit of Everest with sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
Hillary and his wife were surrounded by a crowd of
journalists as they were led to a waiting car to take them to
a private residence.
Hillary is scheduled to join a group of sherpa friends at
the British Embassy in Kathmandu to celebrate the fiftieth
anniversary of his climb on May 29.
Nepal's Tenzing Norgay, who conquered the world's highest
mountain with Hillary, died in 1986.
The success of Hillary and Norgay marked the beginning of
tourism development in Nepal, home to eight of the world's
fourteen tallest mountains.
Nepal has invited every living mountaineer who climbed
Mount Everest after Hillary's 1953 expedition to attend
celebrations on May 29.
Over 1,100 people have reached the summit of Everest
successfully.
At least 188 climbers have perished during the attempt.
